NNNGO Writes National Assembly and
President Obasanjo on FOI Bill
The Nigeria Network of NGOs on February 3rd
2007 sent a letter to the Senate President,
Speaker House of Representatives and the
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
on the need to expedite action on the
Freedom of Information (FOI) bill already in
the National Assembly.
The National Assembly (NASS) conference
committee on the Freedom of Information (FOI)
Bill commenced and concluded the
harmonization of the two versions of the
legal document passed by the Senate and the
House of Representatives on February 14th
2007.
According to the Daily Independent Newspaper
of February 19th 2007: “The work of the
specially constituted committee was
accelerated on Wednesday, on the heels of a
letter sent to the National Assembly by the
Network of Nigerian Non-Governmental
Organisations (NNNGOs), stating why the
legislative houses have to expedite action
on the passage of the bill so as to ensure
that it is not left in the hands of the
incoming government’s legislature to pass
into law”.
The Bill will be presented to the President
for assent soon.
NNNGO Offers Free Membership
Civil society organizations across the
federation whose annual income falls below N 1,000,000 will now have the
opportunity of enjoying free membership of the Nigeria Network of NGOs.
This category of membership tagged
has benefits such as networking, access to information and creating the
needed awareness about their organization.
Another category of membership that comes
free to civil society organizations wishing to be members of the Network is the
; this is open to organizations that are
willing to work with the network on various developmental issues but whose
policy does not allow them to join other networks or membership organizations.
The free membership offer is in line with the
Networks repositioning exercise.
NNNGO Joins Coalition on Issue Based
Politics and Good Governance (CIPOGG)
As part of efforts to fulfill its objectives
in the area of Democracy and Good
Governance, the Nigeria Network of NGOs has
joined the Coalition on Issue Based Politics
and Good Governance.
The Coalition on Issue Based Politics and
Good Governance - a brain child of the
Governance and Institution Policy Commission
of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG)
- evolved out of the NES deliberations.
CIPOGG is a coalition of stakeholders in the
Nigerian electoral process insisting on a
more rigorous, issues-driven political
culture. The Coalition is made up of
representatives of the civil society and
non-governmental organisations, the media,
academia, opinion leaders, technocrats and
the organised private sector.
NNNGO is on the steering committee of CIPOGG.
